What Happens To Your Body When You Speak Non-stop for 25 Hours? (Image: Instagram)

Senator Cory Booker has been making headlines ever since he made the longest ever speech that went on for 25 hours and 5 minutes. The 55-year-old Democrat, who hails from New Jersey, kept talking and taking through the night into the next day. In between his speech, he did not sit, he did not even eat. In fact, he did not even use the restroom.
While many people are shocked as to how the senator was able to pull this off, what they don't realise is that this can severely impact the body. Dr Manjusha Agarwal, Senior Consultant Internal Medicine, Gleneagles Hospital Parel Mumbai, while speaking to media said, "Speaking non-stop for about 25 hours will take a toll on the body, particularly your vocal cords, respiratory system, and even mental well-being. The vocal cords tend to vibrate rapidly with every sound you produce, and excessive talking will cause a lot of stress. Hence, one can experience hoarseness, vocal fatigue, or even temporary voice loss."
She further explained that prolonged talking without breaks can also induce dehydration, as the vocal cords need constant moisture to function properly.
"Excessive talking puts stress on your breathing patterns. The lungs and diaphragm work have to work harder to help with speech, leading to shortness of breath and dizziness over time. Over a period of time, this can lead to symptoms such as exhaustion, headaches, and inability to concentrate in some cases," the expert said.
Talking for extended periods can often be taxing. It can increase your stress and anxiety levels and cause a cognitive overload, making it harder to process thoughts clearly. If the conversation involves emotional topics, it can be stressful for the one who requires speaking.
To protect your voice and overall health, it is essential to take breaks, stay hydrated, and practice vocal rest from time to time. Excessive talking, whether due to professional demands or social habits, should be accompanied by a period of silence for some time to be able to maintain vocal and mental well-being. It is of utmost importance to stay aware and understand the signs given by the body.
