If you are a vagina owner, you have probably panicked at least once after noticing a bleached-like faded patch on your underwear or a thick, white discharge. I am sure it feels disgusting to look at such an ugly underwear. But if you have ever wondered why this happens—especially if you have been replacing your underwear more often than you would like—read on.
The problem isn’t your washing machine or that scented detergent. It is your vagina, and it is doing exactly what it is supposed to do. The good news? This is completely normal and a sign that your vagina is functioning properly. It all comes down to your vagina’s natural pH levels.
According to The Mirror, a healthy vagina has a pH between 3.8 and 4.5—more on the acidic side of the scale. This acidity is actually a defence mechanism, helping to prevent infections and maintain overall vaginal health. Because of this, vaginal discharge can sometimes alter the colour of your underwear.
Speaking to The Mirror, Dr. Vanessa Mackay, a spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, explained, “The vagina is designed to clean itself with natural secretions. It contains good bacteria that help protect it. If these bacteria are disturbed, it can lead to infections like bacterial vaginosis or thrush. It’s normal and healthy for a woman to produce a clear or white discharge. Healthy discharge doesn’t have a strong smell or colour, though women may sometimes feel an uncomfortable wetness.”
Wondering what happens when your vagina’s good bacteria are disturbed?
Infections—An imbalance can allow harmful bacteria or yeast to overgrow, leading to conditions like bacterial vaginosis (BV) or yeast infections.
Unpleasant Odour—BV often causes a fishy smell due to an overgrowth of harmful bacteria.
Unusual Discharge—Changes in colour, consistency, or smell of vaginal discharge can indicate an imbalance.
Irritation and Discomfort—Itching, burning, or general irritation can occur due to disrupted vaginal flora.
Increased Risk of STIs—A weakened vaginal microbiome makes it easier for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) to take hold.
