Miscarriage can be a heartbreaking experience. It occurs when the pregnancy ends spontaneously before the 20th week. It is a common occurrence in women and the emotional and physical impact can be overwhelming. However, it is important to understand that miscarriage is not only a physical loss but also impacts mental and emotional well-being. The grief, guilt, and self-doubt that follow can lead to anxiety, depression, and even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many women struggle with feelings of isolation, pain, and frustration.
Times Now Digital spoke to Dr. Mandavi Rai, Senior Fertility & IVF Specialist, Motherhood Fertility & IVF, Noida, about how taxing a miscarriage can be emotionally. She helped us understand the causes and risk factors for the same.

Causes Of Miscarriage

  • Genetic abnormalities: The most common cause of miscarriage is chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus and hence many women will have miscarriages.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Conditions like thyroid disorders or polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can affect pregnancy and cause a miscarriage.
  • Infections and illnesses: Certain infections, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases increase the risk lead to miscarriage.
  • Lifestyle factors: Smoking, excessive alcohol intake, and high stress levels can contribute to pregnancy loss.
  • Maternal age: The risk of miscarriage rises with age, particularly for women over 35.

Coping Strategies

Miscarriage is a loss, and it’s essential to acknowledge your emotions and give yourself time to heal. Talk to your partner, family, or support groups can provide comfort. Counseling may also be beneficial for women. A balanced diet, adequate sleep, and moderate exercise can help in the recovery process. After a miscarriage, the doctor can assess whether any underlying health conditions need to be addressed and then you can start planning for your pregnancy. Women should practice relaxation techniques like yoga and meditation to calm down.
