Hrithik Roshan’s sister Sunaina recently made headlines with a jaw-dropping weight-loss transformation he underwent recently. According to the 53-year-old, she even reversed 3 fatty liver, the most severe form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is associated with a large accumulation of fat in the liver. NAFLD occurs when excessive fat builds up in the liver. It may not cause any symptoms.
How did Sunaina reverse fatty liver disease?
Sunaina says she followed simple lifestyle swaps to better her condition, which can cause a person to need a liver transplant.
Highlighting the importance of early intervention, Sunaina, in a social media post, said, “Last year I managed to reverse my Grade 3 fatty liver to a Grade 1. Until recently, I managed to eliminate it with just sheer willpower and determination.”
“Reversal was possible through two effective steps of dietary changes along with my regular exercises,” Sunaina added. Sunaina also stressed that fatty liver is “the leading cause of liver cirrhosis,” warning that once the condition progresses to cirrhosis, it becomes “irreversible.”
Can non-alcohol Fatty Liver Disease be reversed?
Experts say you may be able to reverse nonalcoholic fatty liver disease by reducing your intake of certain foods, including those containing saturated and trans-fat. Regular exercise also helps.
Fatty liver disease occurs when an excess amount of fat is present in your liver due to several underlying conditions:
- Obesity
- Type 2 diabetes
- Excess alcohol intake
According to doctors, the outlook for people with this condition depends on the underlying cause; a fatty liver will not work as well as a non-fatty counterpart.
What are the dietary and lifestyle changes needed to fight fatty liver disease?
Since obesity is often an underlying cause of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, experts recommend losing at least 3-5 per cent of your body weight to help you lower the amount of fat in your liver and the inflammation that fatty liver disease causes. For that, you must:
- Keep your fat intake to a daily recommended limit.
-
Avoid more harmful fat sources, such as saturated or trans fats. Prefer unsaturated fats like omega-3 fatty acids, nuts, avocados, or extra virgin olive oil.
- Avoid excessive carbohydrate intak like excess sugar.
- Refrain from eating highly sweetened foods, including those that have simple sugars like fructose.
Aerobic exercises can also help
Regular physical activity can help you lower the amount of inflammation in your liver. Doctors recommend engaging in both aerobic exercises and resistance training to reduce nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. It is recommended that you get 20-60 minutes of exercise for 4-7 days each week, or more than 200 minutes a week.
How long does it take to reverse fatty liver disease?
Doctors say reversing fatty liver disease depends on the cause. If your fatty liver is because of alcohol, you may be able to reverse the effects in around two weeks. If you have NAFLD, it will depend on how quickly you lose weight. But remember, be careful not to lose weight too quickly.
If you are overweight, losing about 7-10 per cent of your body weight safely is enough to reduce the unwanted side effects of your fatty liver.
