The body positivity movement is meant to promote self-acceptance and challenge unrealistic beauty expectations. While its intentions are positive, there has been an emerging debate about the potential that body positivity has negative effects. For some, the pressure of always having to be positive about their bodies can be stressful and induce feelings of guilt and stress rather than confidence and self-acceptance.
The Pressure to Always Be Positive
One of the biggest issues with body positivity is the pressure to always love and accept one's body. Though self-acceptance is helpful, it isn't realistic for everyone to always have a perfect body image. Humans naturally swing between confidence in their bodies at times, and requiring them to be positive constantly can come off as insincere.
When people are not able to achieve the high standard of unshakeable self-acceptance, they might feel that they are failing at body positivity itself and feel frustrated and guilty.
Toxic Positivity in the Body Image Movement
Toxic positivity is the concept that one must always be optimistic even when experiencing genuine negative emotions. In body image, it can lead to individuals suppressing their insecurities rather than working them through in a healthy way. Instead of making space for second-guessing and doubt, toxic positivity might deter individuals from acknowledging that they are struggling in order to isolate them with the negative feelings.
The Comparison Trap
Ironically, body positivity sometimes serves to reinforce comparison. Social media is filled with influencers touting self-love and confidence, but this serves to create yet another unattainable benchmark. If one is already battling body image issues and notices others appearing to accept every part of themselves, one might feel inferior. This comparison can heighten feelings of doubt instead of bringing the comfort and empowerment that the movement aims to provide.
A More Balanced Approach
Rather than requiring constant positivity, body neutrality is a superior choice. Body neutrality is accepting and respecting the body without requiring liking everything about it. This way of thinking defuses the tension of always having to be positive about appearance and instead creates appreciation for what the body is able to do and not necessarily how it looks.
