Ditch Diets! This Simple Pranayama Practice Can Help You Control Cravings And Shed Kilos (Image Credits: iStock)

When we think about weight loss, diet and exercise are the first things that come to mind. But what if the way you breathe could also play a major role? According to Indira C H, a Yoga Expert at Cult, breathwork—specifically Pranayama—can significantly impact metabolism, cravings, and overall weight management.
“Pranayama is not just about breath,” explains Indira. “Prana means life force. Breath is one of the mediums to work on our Prana. Just like a plant wilts when not watered, our body becomes tired, lethargic, and prone to diseases when we don’t nurture the Prana correctly.”

How Stress and Breathing Affect Obesity

Ever noticed how your breath changes when you're anxious or angry? It gets rapid and shallow. Similarly, when you’re feeling low, your breath slows down and becomes heavy. Indira explains that this direct link between emotions and breath is key to understanding how stress impacts obesity.
“Stress creates conditions for hormonal imbalance, cravings, emotional eating, and a slow metabolism,” she says. “By controlling our breath, we can influence our mind, body, and weight,” Indira added.

Pranayama vs. Regular Breathing: What’s the Difference?

While regular breathing consists of simple inhalation and exhalation, Pranayama is about controlled breath expansion. It involves four stages:
-Inhalation (Puraka)
-Holding the breath (Kumbhaka)
- Exhalation (Rechaka)
- Holding after exhalation (Shunyaka)
“Pranayama is a practice that, at its ultimate state, allows you to suspend breath effortlessly,” says Indira.

Boosting Metabolism Through Breathing

According to Ayurveda, the fire element (Agni) governs digestion and metabolism. Certain Pranayama techniques help ignite Jataragni, or digestive fire, leading to improved metabolism. “By practising specific breathing exercises, you can naturally enhance your body’s fat-burning ability,” Indira adds.

Best Breathing Techniques for Weight Loss

If you’re looking to shed extra kilos, these powerful Pranayama techniques can help:
- Kapalabhati (Skull Shining Breath) – Boosts metabolism and detoxifies the body.
- Bhastrika (Bellows Breath) – Increases oxygen supply, energizing the body.
- Suryabhedi (Right Nostril Breathing) – Enhances heat production and digestion.
- Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing) – Balances energy and reduces stress.

How Pranayama Helps Control Cravings

Cravings are often a result of stress and hormonal imbalances. Deep breathing activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol levels, which in turn helps control cravings, explains Indira.
- For sugar cravings – Try Sheetali Pranayama (Cooling Breath)
- For emotional eating – Practice Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing)

The Gut-Breath Connection: How Pranayama Affects DigestionBreathing isn’t just about oxygen intake—it also plays a crucial role in gut health. The vagus nerve connects the brain to the digestive system, regulating metabolism and hunger. Chronic stress disrupts this connection, keeping the body in ‘fight or flight’ mode, which slows digestion.
“Deep breathing activates the ‘rest and digest’ mode, improving digestion, reducing bloating, and enhancing nutrient absorption,” says Indira.
- Best technique for digestion: Anulom Vilom (Alternate Nostril Breathing).
Weight management isn’t just about counting calories—it’s about understanding your body’s natural rhythms. Pranayama helps reset these rhythms by reducing stress, improving metabolism, and curbing cravings. “By incorporating these breathing techniques into your daily routine, you can take a holistic approach to weight management,” Indira said.
So, the next time you reach for a sugary snack, take a deep breath—literally! It might just be the weight-loss hack you've been missing.
