Drinking THIS Tea Daily May Add Years To Your Life, Says Longevity Expert (Image Credits: iStock)

What if a simple change to your daily routine could help you live longer? According to ageing expert Dan Buettner, swapping your usual drink for green tea might just do the trick. He believes that this ancient beverage, enjoyed for centuries in some of the world’s longest-living communities, could add nearly five years to your life—if you drink it consistently.
Buettner, a well-known researcher and author on ageing, stresses that occasional sips won’t cut it. “Seven cups a day is ideal, but even three cups daily have been linked to about four extra years of healthy life expectancy,” he explains. “There are probably 1,500 compounds in green tea—we don’t know for sure which ones contribute the most. But green tea has been a daily habit in at least two Blue Zones,” he adds.

What Are Blue Zones?

Buettner coined the term ‘Blue Zones’ to describe regions where people tend to live longer, healthier lives. These include Okinawa in Japan, Sardinia in Italy, Ikaria in Greece, Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica, and Loma Linda in California. The diet and lifestyle choices in these areas contribute significantly to their longevity, and green tea is a common element in some of these regions, particularly in Japan.

Green Tea’s Health Benefits

Several scientific studies support the claim that green tea can improve health and potentially extend lifespan. Research from 2011 shows that green tea, rich in plant-based antioxidants called catechins, can help reduce levels of ‘bad’ LDL cholesterol. Lower LDL cholesterol is linked to a reduced risk of heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks.
A 2013 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition showed that regular consumption of green or black tea, whether in beverage form or as a supplement, could lower cholesterol levels and reduce blood pressure. More recently, a 2020 study found that green tea significantly reduced total cholesterol (TC) and LDL levels among 3,320 participants.
Green tea may also support brain health. The polyphenols in green tea are believed to slow cognitive decline and reduce the risk of dementia. Research indicates that moderate green tea consumption is linked to improved brain function and a lower risk of neurodegenerative diseases. A study projected for 2025 suggests that drinking several cups of green tea daily could offer extra protection, particularly for men.

Should You Start Drinking More Green Tea?

While the benefits of green tea are well-supported by research, it is always best to consult with a health expert before making major dietary changes, especially if you have underlying health conditions.
If you’re looking for a simple way to boost your health and potentially extend your lifespan, adding a few cups of green tea to your daily routine might be a step in the right direction.
