Melye amiley helps cut through obesity and is the key to better weight management and metabolic health

Bamboo shoots are super popular in India’s northeastern states, especially Tripura, celebrated for their health benefits, which include sustainable weight loss. They are often enjoyed boiled or canned and boast a crisp texture and mild, earthy flavour. According to a recent study, this superfood, locally known as Melye amiley, helps cut through obesity and is the key to better weight management and metabolic health.

What are bamboo shoots?

Bamboo shoots are the edible shoots of bamboo plants, which have more than 1,500 species across the world. Many of the species, like Bambusa vulgaris and Phyllostachys edulis are among the most common types used in cooking. The shoots are peeled before consumption and eaten in many forms, including dried, fresh, or canned. Bamboo shoots are also added to many recipes like stir-fries, curries, soups, and salads and are typically boiled, soaked, cooked, or pickled.
Loaded with protein, fat, and fibre, bamboo shoots are also a powerhouse of antioxidants that protect against inflammation and chronic diseases.

How do bamboo shoots help in weight loss?

Bamboo shoots are super low in calories yet packed with fibre, which makes them a great addition to a healthy weight loss diet. According to experts, fibre slows stomach emptying to help keep you feeling fuller for longer between meals.
Fibre also boosts weight loss and lowers belly fat, even without making any other diet modifications, according to studies. A lot of animal research has also shown that these shoots support gut health to benefit weight loss. Bamboo shoots increase the expression of lipolytic genes like hormone-sensitive lipase, lipoprotein lipase, and adipose triglyceride lipase – all of which have a critical role in breaking down stored fats and promoting fat loss.
Experts say eating bamboo shoots regularly helps convert white fat, which stores energy, into brown fat, which burns energy—a process known as fat browning. Key fat-browning regulator genes like UCP1, PRDM16, and PGC1-alpha are also activated, making it easier for your body to burn fat.

Why should you ferment bamboo shoots?

According to studies, fermented foods positively impact your body weight regulation by enhancing metabolism and supporting the gut microbiome. While the evidence is still emerging, personalised dietary interventions that take into account genetic, immune, and neurological factors could make fermented bamboo shoots an effective tool in weight management strategies.
Additionally, fermented bamboo shoots act as a natural source of probiotics, which immensely help regulate and balance gut bacteria—essential for maintaining a healthy metabolism and preventing obesity.

The downsides of bamboo shoots

According to experts, you need to make sure to reduce the amount of taxiphyllin, and for that, the shoots must be boiled or soaked and dried prior to consumption. Since they are considered goitrogenic, meaning that they may affect your thyroid gland function, you must also get enough iodine and selenium in your diet to prevent thyroid dysfunction.
And so, safely enjoy cooked bamboo shoots in moderation as part of a healthy, well-rounded diet, even if you have impaired thyroid function.
