Repetitive strain injuries sneak up like that unexpected cramp during a sprint, often starting as a mere annoyance before snowballing into a full-blown career-wrecking menace.

RSIs are essentially the bad habits of the sports world—overuse and repetitive motion being the primary culprits. These injuries lurk in every corner of the athletic sphere, taking shape as tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, runner's knee, rotator cuff tendinitis, and more. Dr. Ronak Kothari, physiotherapist at the National Institute of Sports, SAI Patiala, and a key figure in the Indian contingent for the Paris Olympics 2024, warns that untreated RSIs can lead to chronic pain, inflammation, and long-term mobility issues. "Ongoing stress without proper rehabilitation can cause permanent structural damage, potentially leading to surgery and prolonged recovery," he explains.
Dodging the RSI Trap: Prevention Strategies for Athletes
Fortunately, preventing RSIs doesn’t require magic—just smart training and self-awareness. Here’s what experts recommend:
  • Warm-Up & Cool-Down: Treat your muscles like dough; they need proper kneading before the action begins.
  • Rest and Recovery: Overwork without breaks is a one-way ticket to RSI city.
  • Cross-Training: Give your muscles variety—no one likes monotony, not even your tendons.
  • Early Intervention: Listen to your body; minor discomfort today can become major downtime tomorrow.
Dr. Kothari explains the role of technology and data analytics in injury prevention. "AI and modern athlete performance management systems are game-changers," he says. "By maintaining detailed athlete data across their careers, these systems allow for quick interventions and evidence-based prevention strategies.”
