You know the feeling—you are minding your own business when you notice a tiny bit of peeling skin around your nails. You try to pick it, and suddenly, you are in a world of pain as if someone just pricked you with a needle. Sound familiar? While peeling skin around your nails is common, it is not just unpleasant to look at—it could be your body waving a flag, begging for more vitamins!
The Signs of Deficiency
The skin around your nails (also called the cuticle area) is sensitive and prone to drying out. While frequent hand washing, exposure to harsh chemicals, and even the weather can contribute to peeling, sometimes it is a sign of something deeper—like a lack of key nutrients.
Vitamin Deficiencies That Might Be Behind It
  • Vitamin B7 (Biotin)
Biotin is essential for strong nails and healthy skin. A deficiency can lead to brittle nails, dry cuticles, and—you guessed it—peeling skin around your nails. Eggs, nuts, and whole grains can help replenish your levels.
  • Vitamin C
If your skin is peeling easily, your body might be lacking collagen, which is crucial for skin elasticity and repair. Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen, so skimping on citrus fruits, bell peppers, and leafy greens might leave your nails and surrounding skin worse for wear.
  • Vitamin A
Dry, flaky skin is often linked to a vitamin A deficiency. This vitamin is essential for skin repair and hydration. If your diet is low in carrots, sweet potatoes, or spinach, your skin may be feeling the consequences.
  • Vitamin E
Vitamin E acts as a barrier against environmental damage, keeping your skin soft and hydrated. If your hands are constantly exposed to the elements and peeling more than usual, try snacking on almonds, sunflower seeds, or avocados.
What Can You Do?
If your cuticles resemble a peeling onion, it is time to up your vitamin game. A balanced diet filled with colourful fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats will do wonders. Hydration is extremely important—drink plenty of water and use a good hand cream to lock in moisture.
