Zydus Lifesciences has introduced VaxiFlu-4, India's first quadrivalent influenza vaccine to combat flu season. This new vaccine provides broader protection by covering both influenza A and B strains, reducing the risk of a vaccine mismatch. The vaccine has received approval from the Central Drug Laboratory (CDL), ensuring its safety and efficacy, the company confirmed.
What Makes VaxiFlu-4 Different?
The Quadrivalent Inactivated Influenza Vaccine has been developed at Zydus' Vaccine Technology Centre (VTC) in Ahmedabad, a facility known for its expertise in vaccine research, development, and manufacturing.
Unlike trivalent flu vaccines, which protect against only three strains, quadrivalent vaccines include an additional B strain, offering broader immunity and reducing the risk of mismatches between the circulating flu viruses and the vaccine composition.
The Dangers of Influenza
Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It spreads primarily through airborne respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Direct contact with contaminated surfaces or infected people can contribute to transmission.
Flu symptoms can range from mild to severe and, in some cases, lead to hospitalization or even death. Those at highest risk include children under five, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seasonal influenza causes 290,000 to 650,000 deaths worldwide each year.
Dr Sharvil Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences, explains the importance of preventive healthcare, saying, "Preventives are the key to public health in both developing and developed nations, and vaccines play a vital role in improving overall quality of life."
Tips to Stay Safe from Influenza
While vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent the flu, additional precautions can help minimize the risk of infection:
Get Vaccinated: Annual flu shots offer the best protection against the latest circulating strains.
Practice Good Hand Hygiene: Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
Avoid Touching Your Face: The flu virus can enter the body through the eyes, nose, and mouth.
Maintain Respiratory Hygiene: Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing.
Keep Your Distance: Avoid close contact with infected individuals to reduce the risk of transmission.
Disinfect Commonly Used Surfaces: Regularly clean doorknobs, mobile phones, and other frequently touched objects.
Stay Home If You Feel Unwell: Resting and avoiding public places helps prevent the spread of infection to others.
Boost Immunity: Maintain a healthy diet, stay hydrated, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep to strengthen your immune system.
With the launch of VaxiFlu-4, Zydus Lifesciences is taking a proactive step in combating seasonal influenza. This vaccine aims to reduce the burden of influenza-related illness and deaths. Make sure you follow proper hygiene and preventive measures to stay safe.
