A joyous birthday celebration in Hanoi turned into a traumatic experience when a woman suffered severe facial burns after a balloon exploded in her hands. The incident, which occurred on February 14, recently gained widespread attention after the victim, Giang Pham, shared her ordeal on social media.

A Shocking Birthday Tragedy

Pham shares that the party was held at a restaurant adorned with colourful balloons. Wanting to capture a perfect moment, she purchased an extra bunch of balloons to pose with while taking pictures. However, as she stood on stage holding a birthday cake in one hand and the balloons in the other, disaster struck.

The balloons accidentally brushed against the lit candles on the cake, causing an explosion. Flames erupted, engulfing her face momentarily and leaving her in pain.

Shocked and injured, Pham immediately covered her face with her hands and rushed to the bathroom, where she splashed cold water on her burns. She was later taken to the hospital, where doctors confirmed that she had suffered first and second-degree burns. Fortunately, doctors assured her that there would be no permanent scarring, though her skin tone might take months to return to normal.

The Hidden Danger of Hydrogen Balloons

What Pham did not realize at the time was that the balloons she had purchased were filled with hydrogen gas—a highly flammable substance. Hydrogen balloons are often used in decorations because they are cheaper than helium-filled balloons. However, unlike helium, which is non-flammable and safe, hydrogen is extremely volatile. When exposed to an ignition source such as a candle, lighter, or even static electricity, hydrogen balloons can explode violently, causing severe burns and injuries.

Pham later discovered that the seller had not informed her about the risks associated with hydrogen-filled balloons. This lack of awareness and safety precautions makes such incidents more common than many realize.

Similar Incidents Highlight the Risks

This is not the first time hydrogen balloons have caused harm. Around the world, there have been multiple reports of serious injuries and even fatalities due to balloon explosions. In 2019, a similar case in India saw a group of children suffer burns when hydrogen balloons exploded during a festival. In another case, a man in China sustained severe injuries when a cluster of hydrogen balloons burst near an open flame.

Experts warn that while hydrogen balloons may look harmless, they pose significant safety hazards. The gas is highly combustible, and even a tiny spark can trigger a dangerous explosion.

Expert Warnings and Safety Precautions

Dr Sandeep Yadav, Consultant in Respiratory & Critical Care Medicine at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Noida, emphasizes the need for greater awareness about the risks of hydrogen balloons.

"Hydrogen is an extremely flammable gas that can ignite instantly upon contact with a heat source. Unlike helium, which is safe for decorative purposes, hydrogen-filled balloons can cause severe burns, injuries, and even fatalities in extreme cases. It is crucial to educate the public and enforce strict regulations on their sale and use," he explains.

To prevent accidents like Pham’s, experts recommend the following safety measures:

- Avoid purchasing hydrogen balloons – Always opt for helium-filled balloons, which are non-flammable and safe.

- Keep balloons away from open flames – Never allow balloons to come near candles, lighters, cigarettes, or other sources of ignition.

- Be cautious at celebrations – If you are at an event where balloons are used, be mindful of their contents and keep them at a safe distance from fire hazards.

- Check with sellers before purchasing – Always ask balloon vendors about the type of gas used and avoid purchasing if hydrogen is involved.

- Educate children and event organizers – Make sure kids and party planners are aware of the risks associated with hydrogen balloons.
