Unexplained pain and swelling in sensitive areas can be concerning. Not many know but it may be linked to conditions like Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) and Angiokeratomas.
We spoke to Dr. Gauri Jagdale, Consultant - Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Motherhood Hospitals to understand its symptoms, causes, and prevention that can help in early diagnosis and better management.
She explained that Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM) is a serious condition that occurs when the blood vessels tend to form an abnormal connection while disrupting the normal blood flow. Over time, it can lead to a range of discomforting side effects such as excessive pain, swelling, and even bleeding.
These side effects can occur in sensitive areas like deep inside the body, skin, or the genitals making it an overwhelming experience. If left untreated, it can cause a range of severe complications like poor blood circulation throughout the body and tissues being damaged.
On the other hand, Angiokeratomas are small spots that may sometimes appear dark red or purple. Enlargement of the blood vessels can be the culprit for the formation of these spots on your skin. Usually, most of these spots are harmless but sometimes they can bleed, and cause itching or discomfort. People need to be cautious when it comes to AVMs and Angiokeratomas as they may seem minor inconvenience at first but they can cause discomfort and emotional exhaustion. Some may even require medical attention if the symptoms tend to worsen.

Symptoms

One can experience a range of symptoms that could indicate the occurrence of AVMs or Angiokeratomas. This can involve symptoms like pain, swelling, tenderness, red or purple colored spots on the skin, itching, burning sensation, numbness, warmth in the affected area, easy bruising, unusual bleeding, slow wound healing, increased sensitivity to touch, blood in the urine (in case, if its genital AVMs), and skin irritation.

Tips To Stay Protected

  • Go for regular health checkups as early detection can help prevent severe complications.
  • Avoid putting excessive pressure or scratching the sensitive areas to protect your skin from any type of friction or injury.
  • Closely monitor skin changes and immediately consult a doctor if you spot any type of spots for prompt diagnosis.
  • Stay hydrated and physically active to maintain good blood circulation in the body.
  • Use mild and gentle skincare products. Avoid those with harsh or chemical ingredients that can easily irritate your skin.
  • In case, if you develop lesions then take utmost care of them by keeping the area clean if they start to bleed.
