More than 50 students from the Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) in Jadcherla, Hyderabad fell sick due to food poisoning after consuming their campus meals this week. Shortly after eating, several students began experiencing symptoms like nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and fever. Instead of being shifted to hospitals, the affected students were treated on the college premises by private doctors. Many received treatment while lying on the floors of the library and common rooms, raising concerns about the handling of the situation.
Students alleged that the university management attempted to cover up the incident by not providing immediate and proper medical care. They also claimed that their previous complaints about poor food quality had been ignored by the administration.
Jadcherla MLA P. Anirudh Reddy visited the institute upon learning about the incident and criticized the administration’s response. Expressing shock at the students being treated on the floor, he questioned the qualifications of the medical personnel and the lack of proper medical equipment.
“You are only trying to protect the university. Protect the children. Shift them to hospitals immediately. If anything happens, who will take responsibility?” the MLA asked university officials.
Following his intervention, 15-20 students were finally moved to hospitals in Mahabubnagar and Hyderabad for better treatment.
Students’ Concerns Over Food Safety
Students claim this is not an isolated case. They have raised concerns multiple times about the poor quality of food and drinking water provided at the institute. Complaints about substandard groceries, vegetables, and cooking oil used in meal preparation have reportedly gone unaddressed.
The incident has raised serious questions about food safety standards and medical preparedness on campus.
Precautionary Measures To Follow
To prevent food poisoning and ensure food safety in hostels and institutions, students and management can follow these measures:
For Students:
Check food quality: Avoid eating meals that look or smell spoiled.
Report concerns immediately: Inform the administration if food appears unhygienic.
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of safe, filtered water to prevent dehydration.
Be cautious of symptoms: If experiencing nausea or stomach pain, seek medical help immediately.
Maintain hygiene: Wash hands before and after eating to prevent infections.
For Institutions:
Ensure food safety audits: Regularly inspect the quality of groceries and food preparation methods.
Provide clean drinking water: Regular maintenance of water filters is essential.
Immediate medical assistance: Have trained medical staff on standby with necessary equipment.
Emergency transportation: Keep ambulances ready for urgent cases.
Address complaints promptly: Listen to student concerns and take immediate action.
With proper food safety measures and a proactive response from the administration, such incidents can be prevented in the future. Authorities must ensure student well-being remains a top priority.
