Norovirus Outbreak Hits P&O Cruise In Europe, Passengers 'Dropping Like Flies' (Image Credits: iStock, Image For Representation)

A suspected norovirus outbreak has hit the P&O Iona cruise ship, leaving many passengers sick. The ship, carrying 5,000 guests and 1,800 crew members, is currently sailing through Belgium on a seven-day northern European trip.
Passengers have reported people vomiting in restaurants, on decks, and outside cabins. “People are dropping like flies,” one traveller told the media, adding that a large number of guests and staff are showing symptoms.
P&O Cruises confirmed that some passengers have reported symptoms of a stomach illness but said the number of affected people is less than one per cent of those onboard. The company did not share details about infected crew members but assured that strict health and safety protocols are in place.
“Gastrointestinal illnesses are common and spread easily in places like hotels, schools, and restaurants,” a P&O spokesperson said.
Passengers who are unable to take part in onshore activities due to illness will receive a full refund.

What Is Norovirus?

Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that causes stomach flu. It spreads through contaminated food, surfaces, and direct contact with infected people. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, nausea, and stomach cramps.
Dehydration is a major risk, as the body loses fluids due to vomiting and diarrhoea. This can lead to dizziness, dry mouth, and reduced urination. There is no specific medicine for norovirus, and doctors recommend drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.

How To Stay Safe From Norovirus

Since norovirus spreads quickly in crowded places like cruise ships, here are some ways to protect yourself:
- Wash Your Hands Often – Use soap and water regularly, especially before eating or touching your face.
- Avoid Close Contact with Sick People – Stay away from those showing symptoms.
- Sanitize Surfaces – Wipe down tables, door handles, and other frequently touched areas.
- Stay Hydrated – Drink plenty of water if you feel unwell to avoid dehydration.
- Be Careful with Food – Eat freshly prepared food and avoid sharing utensils or drinks.

Norovirus Cases on the Rise

Norovirus cases have been increasing. NHS England recently reported that over 1,160 people are hospitalized daily due to the virus, the highest number since records began in 2012. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also confirmed a large outbreak earlier this year.
Cruises are meant to be fun and relaxing, but this outbreak is a reminder to take precautions. If you’re planning a trip, following basic hygiene practices can help you stay safe.
