Doctors suspect butterfly toxins would have caused an embolism

A 14-year-old boy from Brazil lost his life after undertaking a bizarre challenge that led to sepsis—a severe and fatal infection in his body. According to news reports, Davi Nunes Moreira injected himself with a mixture of dead butterfly remains and water, which led to an allergic reaction.
Initially, Davi told his father that he hurt himself while playing. As his condition weakened, he informed doctors what he had done. The doctors at Santa Marcelina Hospital, where Davi was being treated, speculated that the boy may have suffered from an embolism, an infection. “We don’t know how he prepared this mixture or the size of the fragments he managed to inject into the body,” Dr. Luiz Fernando D. Relvas, a specialist, told a local newspaper.
Davi’s death is said to be linked to possible toxins in the butterfly mix that caused his body to shut down as he went into septic shock due to sepsis.

What is sepsis?

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical condition caused by your body’s overwhelming response to an infection. According to doctors, if there is no immediate treatment, it leads to tissue damage, organ failure, and even death.
Experts say when there is an infection in the body, the immune system tries to fight it. But sometimes when the immune system stops fighting, the infection begins to spread and damage your normal tissues and organs, leading to widespread inflammation throughout your body.
At the same time, an abnormal chain reaction in your clotting system causes blood clots to form in the blood vessels. This reduces blood flow to the different organs of your body and can cause significant damage or even failure.

Who does sepsis affect?

Doctors say while sepsis can affect anyone, those prone to infections—especially bacteremia—are at a particularly high risk. However, you are also at high risk if you:
  • Are over 65 years of age
  • Are pregnant
  • Have medical conditions like diabetes, obesity, cancer, and kidney issues
  • Have a weak immune system
  • Have severe injuries like burns and wounds
  • Have catheters, IVs, or breathing tubes

What causes sepsis?

Sepsis is mostly caused by bacterial infections, along with possible fungal, parasitic, and viral infections. According to doctors, you can get sepsis when an infection triggers a chain reaction throughout your bod causing organ dysfunction. The infection leading to sepsis starts in many different parts of the body, including common sites and types like:
  • The respiratory system
  • Urinary tract system
  • Gastrointestinal system
  • Central nervous system
  • Skin

Signs and symptoms of sepsis

Since sepsis can affect any different area of your body, there are various possible symptoms, a few of which include:
  • Blood poisoning or septicemia, which causes severe skin rash
  • Urinary issues
  • Low energy and weakness
  • Fast heart rate
  • Low blood pressure
  • Hypothermia
  • High fever
  • Shaking and chills
  • Warm or clammy and sweaty skin
  • Confusion or agitation
  • Hyperventilation and breathlessness
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
