Home-cooked meals promote mindfulness which helps you make better food choices

Celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar slammed billionaire Nikhil Kamath’s post on no home cooking on X, advising followers to “not listen to rich boys.” Rujuta, who propagates healthy eating, especially simple meals cooked at home, said it helps make you healthy and prevents sickness.
"Do not listen to rich boys; eating at home is a healthy practice. One that can prevent many diseases, lead to sharing between communities, and deepen the bond of love and security," Diwekar posted on X.
Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamath recently commented about how Indians are still addicted to ghar ka khana or home-cooked food, while saying that many people in Singapore never cook at home. On the contrary, Rujuta advised, “Learn to cook. Practice it often. Irrespective of gender, age or income.”

Why is home-cooked food healthier?

Experts say home-cooked meals are considered healthier since you would have complete control over the ingredients, and so, the food will be fresh, along with natural options with less added salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
Food cooked in restaurants and eateries is often loaded with processed ingredients that contain higher levels of saturated fats and preservatives. A few benefits of cooking at home include:

Reduces the intake of preservatives

According to experts, meals that are not cooked at home consist of processed foods, which contain high amounts of unhealthy fats, added sugars, and sodium. All of these ingredients contribute to various health issues, including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.
Estimates say that processed foods are mostly responsible for more premature deaths than cigarette smoking. And so, cooking at home is much easier to limit or entirely cut out the number of processed foods on your plate.

You are less likely to ingest PFAs

PFAs are pesky and scary chemicals found in much higher numbers in fast and junk foods. They are known as forever chemicals, as they are extremely persistent in the environment and human bodies. They can lead to health problems such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, fertility issues, and cancer.
According to studies, those who eat more at home have lower levels of PFA in their blood.

Encourages mindful eating.

According to experts, cooking at home promotes mindful eating. When you invest time and effort into preparing a meal, you naturally become more aware of what you are eating and how much you consume. This mindfulness can help you make better food choices from the start, prevent overeating, and limit mindless snacking throughout the day.

Gives you a nutritional advantage

Home-cooked meals give you complete control over the ingredients you use—which may be mostly high-quality, nutrient-dense, and beneficial for your health. You can also customise your meals to meet your specific dietary needs. Homecooked meals are lower in calories, unhealthy fats, and sodium compared to restaurant or processed foods. By using fresh, whole ingredients and minimising the use of additives and preservatives, you can create nutritious and balanced meals that support your overall health.
