You're at the starting line, racing heart, sweaty palms, mind going through all the possible worst-case scenarios. It's an exam, a job interview, a sports competition, or a bake competition where everyone now resembles professional pastry chefs: competition anxiety is overbearing. But fear not—you're not alone, and better still, you're not doomed.
Why Does Competition Stress Hit So Hard?
Our brains, in their infinite wisdom, still think we live in a prehistoric jungle where survival depends on beating the next person to the best hunting spot. It's why even a friendly rivalry feels like a matter of life and death. The threat of failure, embarrassment, or simply not meeting your own standards sends your stress levels into orbit. But here's the thing: stress is not necessarily your enemy.
  • Step One: Befriend the Butterflies
That jittery sensation? That's just energy. Your body is providing you with the fuel to be your best self. Rather than attempting to quash the jitters, work with them. Think about it like this: You're tapping into it like a superhero who's found their powers for the first time. Take that energy and funnel it into concentration and determination, instead of panicking.
  • Step Two: Keep Your Eyes on Your Own Paper
Ever catch yourself how stress level skyrockets when you're comparing yourself to another? One second you're good, and the next you're convinced everyone else is doing it better tenfold? Here's the truth: comparison is a slippery slope to self-doubt. Get out of your own way. Your path, your progress, your growth—that's what matters.
  • Step Three: Embrace the Worst-Case Scenario
What if you lose? What if you trip on stage? What if your soufflé falls like a flat balloon? Well. so what? Unless you're defusing a bomb (in which case, stress is completely warranted), the stakes are never as high as they seem. Accept that setbacks are inevitable, and the pressure dissipates.
  • Step Four: Redefine Winning
Victory isn't only about a prize, an A+, or a promotion. It's about improvement, experience, and relishing the challenge. If you judge success by what you learn and get better at, every contest is a victory.
