76-Year-Old Donor Saves 5 Lives In 12 Hours With Double-Hand, Kidney, Lung And Cornea Transplants! (Image Credits: Amrita Hospital)

In a 12-hour surgery, doctors at Amrita Hospital, Faridabad, successfully transplanted five organs from a 76-year-old donor, giving new life to five recipients. Among the procedures performed were a double-hand transplant, a kidney transplant, corneal transplants, and a lung transplant. This milestone reinforces Amrita Hospital as the first in North India to conduct a double-hand transplant.
The donor, the wife of an Army officer, suffered from intracranial bleeding (brain haemorrhage) before her organs were donated. Her selfless decision helped multiple patients regain hope, including Twinkle Dogra, a 38-year-old PhD scholar at AIIMS Rishikesh, who lost her hands due to an accident involving a live wire.

Advancing Transplant Surgeries in North India

Amrita Hospital has been steadily improving its expertise in upper limb transplantation. In the past two and a half years, the hospital has performed five such transplants on three patients in Faridabad. The same medical team first introduced upper limb transplants in India at Amrita Hospital, Kochi, in 2015. Their growing experience has positioned them as leaders in reconstructive surgery in North India.
Dr. Mohit Sharma, Head of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Amrita Hospital, explains the complexity of the procedure. "Hand transplants are challenging as they involve multiple tissue types and require strong immunosuppression due to the skin’s heightened immune response. This success highlights our capability to handle intricate surgical challenges. It is also remarkable that a single donor has helped five people regain their lives," he said.

A Second Chance at Life

Twinkle Dogra, one of the recipients, expressed her gratitude for the transplant. “I never imagined I would get a second chance at life. Learning about Amrita Hospital’s first-hand transplant in 2015 gave me hope. The medical team's expertise has not only restored my mobility but also renewed my optimism for the future. From early recovery to intensive rehabilitation, they have supported me every step of the way. The counselling from clinical psychologists has kept me motivated, and as my hands regain function, I feel more independent.”
The complex procedures required the collaboration of four specialized surgical teams, along with experts in nephrology, ophthalmology, and critical care. This extensive coordination highlights Amrita Hospital’s capability to conduct multi-organ transplants and handle challenging medical cases.
This case shows how one donor has transformed five lives, showcasing the importance of raising awareness about organ donation and its life-changing potential.
