Doctors discovered at least 20 tumours in Radwah’s liver, a diagnosis opposite to her “excellent health”

A fit and healthy young woman thought the acute chest pain she had been suffering from was due to an ill-fitting bra that she had been wearing for some time. However, after tests were conducted, doctors revealed Radwah Oda was suffering from stage 4 bowel cancer.
Doctors discovered at least 20 tumours in Radwah’s liver—a diagnosis stark opposite to her “excellent health,” as she exercised up to five times a week and ate a healthy and clean diet. Radwah said she began experiencing extreme tiredness, loss of appetite, and recurrent stomach issues, which included acid reflux and gas, which she thought was due to inflammatory bowel syndrome. But when the pain in the right side of her breast became unbearable, the 33-year-old stock market analyst got herself checked.
“At first, I thought it might be due to my bra being too tight, even though the discomfort was only on one side,” Radwah told The Sun, adding she also had symptoms like dark blood in her stool. “Whenever I experienced symptoms, I brushed them off as something minor. I didn’t make time for doctor’s appointments and hadn’t had an annual check-up in years,” she added.

CT scan revealed her cancer had reached the liver

A CT scan uncovered her diagnosis when Radwah was diagnosed with bowel cancer that had spread to her liver—riddled with 20 tumours.
Radwah was put on immediate treatment, which included chemotherapy along with three surgeries to take out the tumours. After the last surgery, a part of her colon and half of her liver were also removed. While the chemotherapy continued, doctors told Radwah that the treatment was not working since the tumours continued to grow.
While Radwah is still fighting her battle with this cancer, she continues to educate people about not ignoring the symptoms. At present, Radwah is part of a clinical trial to test a new treatment.

What is bowel cancer?

Bowel cancer, also known as colon cancer, is found anywhere in the large bowel, which includes the colon and rectum. It is now one of the most common types of cancer across the world that develops from certain polyps or growths in the inner lining of your colon.
Doctors say they have to do screening tests that detect precancerous polyps before they can become cancerous tumours. Bowel cancer that is not detected or treated may spread to other areas of your body. Thanks to screening tests, early treatment, and new kinds of treatment, fewer people are dying from colon cancer.

Red flag signs and symptoms of bowel cancer you must take note of

Even though screening is one way of ensuring early diagnosis, you must never ignore any symptoms of bowel cancer, which can help you detect it early. Doctors say if you notice any of the signs, do not be embarrassed and don't ignore them. A few of these signs are:
  • Bleeding from the back passage, or blood in your poop
  • A change in your normal toilet habits—going more frequently for example
  • Pain or a lump in your stomach
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Weight loss without diet or exercise
Tumours in the bowel typically bleed, which can cause a shortage of red blood cells, known as anemia. It can cause tiredness and sometimes breathlessness. In some cases, bowel cancer can block the bow this is known as bowel obstruction.
