Teddi said her smaller tumours would be dealt with radiation therapy later

Teddi Mellencamp, former star of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, says doctors have found multiple tumours on her brain. The 43-year-old daughter of musician John Mellencamp wrote on Instagram that she was undergoing immediate surgery to remove two of the tumours.
Teddi said the remaining smaller tumours would be dealt with with radiation therapy later. "For the last several weeks I've been dealing with severe and debilitating headaches. Yesterday the pain was unbearable and required hospitalisation," she wrote. "After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumours on my brain, which they believe have been growing for at least 6 months."
Mellencamp was earlier diagnosed with stage two melanoma in 2022 and had regular treatment to remove the skin cancer. On World Cancer Day, she posted an image of her surgical scar on social media, emphasising the importance of regular skin checks.

What is a brain tumour?

A brain tumour is an abnormal growth or mass of cells in or around your brain. Doctors say, along with spinal and brain tumours, they are known as the central nervous system. Brain tumours can be malignant or benign and some grow quickly, while others are slow-growing.
Only about one-third of brain tumours are cancerous. But whether they are cancerous or not, brain tumours impact brain function and your health if they grow large enough to press on surrounding nerves, blood vessels, and tissue.
According to doctors, whether they are cancerous or not, they can cause serious problems as the skull is rigid and does not have enough room for the tumour to expand. Also, if a tumour develops near parts of your brain that control vital functions, it may cause symptoms like:
  • Weakness
  • Difficulty walking
  • Problems with balance
  • Partial or complete loss of vision
  • Difficulty understanding or using language
  • Memory issues
  • Brain tumours can cause problems by:
  • Directly invading and destroying healthy brain tissue.
  • Putting pressure on nearby tissue.
  • Increasing pressure within your skull
  • Causing fluid to build up in your brain.
Blocking the normal flow of cerebrospinal fluid through the spaces within your brain causing those spaces to enlarge.

Signs and symptoms of brain tumours

Many people who have a brain tumour experience no symptoms, especially if it is extremely small. Doctors say the signs and symptoms of a brain tumour vary depending on the tumour’s location, size, and type, which include:
  • Severe headaches, especially in the morning or when you wake up at night
  • Seizures
  • Difficulty thinking or understanding
  • Personality changes
  • Weakness or paralysis on one side of your body
  • Balance issues
  • Dizziness
  • Vision and hearing issues
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Confusion and disorientation
