When it comes to natural remedies, fenugreek water is the oldest buzz in the world of women’s health. From balancing hormones to easing menstrual cramps, this humble kitchen spice is believed to be a potential game-changer. But is it all just hype, or is there real science behind it?
Fenugreek (methi) is a seed commonly used in Indian and Middle Eastern cuisine. But it is not just for spicing up your curries—this little seed is packed with nutrients, including iron, magnesium, and phytoestrogens, which mimic oestrogen in the body.
Fenugreek seeds release soluble fibre and chemicals that are believed to improve hormonal health when they are soaked in water for the entire night. Fenugreek water is a natural remedy that many women swear by to control their cycles, lessen PMS symptoms, and even increase milk in new mothers.
Fenugreek Water and Hormonal Balance
Mood swings, intractable weight gain, and irregular periods are just a few of the unpleasant symptoms that can result from hormonal imbalances. Fenugreek's phytoestrogens may help stabilise oestrogen levels, particularly in people who are going through menopause or PCOS-related hormonal changes.
Diosgenin, another substance found in fenugreek, is thought to aid in the synthesis of progesterone, which is necessary for controlling the menstrual cycle. According to some research, fenugreek may also help reduce insulin resistance, a frequent problem in PCOS that impacts ovulation and hormone levels.
Can It Help with Menstrual Pain?
If your period feels like a medieval torture session, fenugreek water might offer some relief. The anti-inflammatory properties of fenugreek can help relax uterine muscles and ease cramps. A study published in The Journal of Reproductive Medicine found that women who consumed fenugreek seed extract reported reduced menstrual pain and fewer symptoms of fatigue and nausea.
Any Side Effects?
Like all good things, moderation is key. Because fenugreek can drop blood sugar, you should first speak with your doctor if you have diabetes or are on medication. Additionally, some persons complain of mild stomach problems or a body odour that smells like maple syrup (yes, really!).
How to Prepare Fenugreek Water
Easy! For the entire night, soak one teaspoon of fenugreek seeds in a glass of water. For optimal effects, drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.
