Gambling Disorders Affect 80 Million Worldwide, With Adolescents Most Impacted: Lancet Study (Image Credits: iStock)
The digital era has significantly expanded the online casino and sports betting market, leading to a rise in gambling-related issues. According to a recent report by The Lancet Public Health Commission, around 80 million people worldwide are experiencing gambling disorders or problematic gambling, with adolescents being the most affected group.
The study revealed that children and adolescents are increasingly exposed to gambling advertisements in ways never seen before. This demographic is particularly susceptible to the appeal of quick money and the engaging, game-like designs of online gambling platforms. The report emphasized the need for stricter global regulatory measures to mitigate the harmful effects of gambling on health and well-being worldwide.
An international team of experts conducted a comprehensive review, analyzing global gambling patterns. Their findings indicated that roughly 448.7 million adults worldwide engage in some form of risk gambling, where individuals display at least one behavioural symptom or face a negative personal, social, or health consequence related to gambling. Of these, about 80 million adults suffer from gambling disorders or problematic gambling.
The report highlighted that online casinos and slot products pose the highest risks. These forms of gambling were linked to disorders in 15.8% of adults and a concerning 26.4% of adolescents. In comparison, sports betting affected 8.9% of adults and 16.3% of adolescents, showing that young people are particularly vulnerable to the risks associated with online gambling.
Professor Heather Wardle, Co-Chair of the Commission from the University of Glasgow, noted that unlike traditional forms of gambling, modern technology has transformed access. "Anyone with a mobile phone now has access to what is essentially a casino in their pocket, 24 hours a day," Wardle said. She warned that sophisticated marketing and technological strategies are designed to attract more users, increasing the health risks associated with gambling.
The consequences of gambling extend beyond financial losses, the report added. Problematic gambling is linked to physical and mental health challenges, strained relationships, higher suicide risk, domestic violence, increased crime, and job loss. Dr. Kristiana Siste from Universitas Indonesia emphasized the urgency of protective measures, stating that early exposure to gambling significantly raises the risk of developing gambling disorders later in life.
The Commission called for policymakers to view gambling as a public health issue, similar to alcohol and tobacco, and to implement strategies to safeguard future generations from gambling-related harms.
