This Common Virus Could Triple Your Risk Of Death — Are You At Risk? (Image Credits: iStock)

A common yet often underestimated virus is now being linked to a significantly higher risk of death in adults. According to a recent study, adults who suffer from respiratory syncytial virus-associated acute respiratory infection (RSV-ARI) may face a nearly threefold increased risk of dying within a year of falling ill.
The study, presented at the ESCMID Global 2025 Congress held in Austria, examined data from 5,289 adults in Denmark who were diagnosed with RSV-ARI between 2011 and 2022. These patients were compared to 15,867 healthy people from the general population. The researchers followed both groups for one year after the onset of the infection.
Lead researcher Maria Joao Fonseca said the most alarming result was the long-lasting impact RSV-ARI had on patients. “Even after the acute phase of illness, individuals continued to show poorer health outcomes compared to others. This shows how serious and long-term the effects of RSV-ARI can be,” she said.

RSV in Adults: A Serious Threat

While RSV is mostly known for causing respiratory problems in infants and young children, this study shows its severe consequences for adults as well — particularly those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. RSV can lead to complications such as pneumonia and worsen chronic respiratory diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.
The study found that individuals with these conditions who contracted RSV experienced increased hospitalisation, more frequent ICU admissions, and a greater risk of health deterioration.

Why RSV-ARI is Riskier for People with COPD and Asthma

Patients with COPD and asthma are particularly vulnerable to RSV-ARI. Fonseca explained that exacerbations (flare-ups) of these diseases were among the most common and dangerous outcomes.
“COPD and asthma are already difficult to manage. When RSV is added to the mix, the conditions can become severe enough to require hospital or ICU care,” she said.
This is why she urges the healthcare system to pay close attention to individuals with these underlying illnesses, especially during respiratory infection seasons. Early detection and preventive care could help reduce life-threatening complications.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) symptoms include:
    Persistent cough
  • Shortness of breath, especially during physical activity
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Frequent respiratory infections
  • Fatigue
  • Asthma symptoms include:
Wheezing or whistling sound while breathing
  • Coughing, especially at night or early morning
  • Tightness in the chest
  • Shortness of breath
  • Episodes triggered by allergens, exercise, or cold air
  • Anyone experiencing these symptoms — especially those with a history of RSV-ARI — should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
