If you have been feeling foggy and tired during the day, it could be a sign of an underlying sleep disorder

To get good, regulated sleep, the golden rule, according to experts, is 7-8 hours. However, it is common for everyone to have nights where everyone stays up way too late and notices the effects of it the day after. But what if you are getting the right amount of sleep, but still feel tired?
“This is where the question of the quality of sleep arises. There are multiple reasons why one would not get good quality sleep. And these factors are called sleep disorders,” Dr. Nimish M. Shah, Consultant, Pulmonary Medicine, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital, told Times Now.

Reasons why most people wake up tired?

If you have been feeling foggy and tired during the day, it could be a sign of an underlying sleep disoA few of these include:

Sleep apnea

According to experts, it causes you to stop breathing temporarily while asleep and is known for causing people to regularly feel exhausted. “Obstructive sleep apnea is a spectrum of disorders. Right from snoring to OSA, or sleep apnea to complex sleep apnea to hyperventilation syndrome, which occurs in morbidly obese people, to a combination of obstructive sleep apnea and hyperventilation syndrome,” said Dr. Shah.
Sleep apnea typically occurs in those who have a history of snoring and complain of poor quality of sleep and multiple awakenings at night. They may or may not have choking or gasping episodes at night, which they may experience or their partners experience. They may need to use the restroom multiple times at night. Typically wake up with a headache or feeling unrefreshed and have excessive daytime sleepiness or fatigue.
“In this condition typically you have a drop in the oxygen levels, which causes multiple stimuli to the brain, which wakes the brain up, and hence despite getting the quantity of sleep you don't get the quality,” Dr. Shah added.

Thyroid issues

According to experts, your daytime fatigue could also be a sign of thyroid, specifically an underactive thyroid gland. It happens when your thyroid organ does not make enough of the thyroid hormone, which in turn, slows down your metabolism and can lead to constant fatigue.

Diet

If you are used to eating a big meal before bed, it can certainly impact your sleep. Also, alcohol is very disruptive, as drinking within four hours of sleep leads to poor quality of sleep throughout the night.

Pediatric limb movements

According to Dr. Shah, pediatric limb movement is a sleep disorder in which you do not have any snoring or respiratory issues but you have involuntary movements of the legs, which cause arousal of the brain and hence lead to fragmentation of sleep. "Again, should you have a normal sleep study that is mainly focused on respiratory, you should look into these symptoms if the history suggests so,” he said.

Bruxism

Bruxism or teeth grinding causes damage to the enamel of your teeth and is generally pointed out by dentists.

Mental health conditions

Experts say your sleep issues can also be related to an underlying mental illness that you may not know about. Conditions like anxiety or depression play a major role in making you feel tired during the day, even when you get enough hours of sleep. Apart from that, mood disorders like bipolar disorder or premenstrual dysphoric disorder can cause feelings of sluggishness during the day.
