Delhi's Air Quality Deteriorates After Diwali: Must-Try Detox Foods To Cleanse Your Body (Image Credits: iStock)

After the Diwali festivities, the Delhi air quality has deteriorated significantly just like every year. The celebration’s fireworks, combined with seasonal weather changes, construction dust, and traffic emissions, have contributed to a steep rise in air pollution. The air quality index (AQI) has reached hazardous levels in many parts of Delhi, which has raised serious concerns about respiratory health and overall well-being. Extreme air pollution can lead to many health problems including irritation in the eyes, respiratory problems, and skin irritation and it also affects immunity.
Hence, we need to take extra precautions to keep our health in check. Here we have listed some detox foods you can incorporate into your diet that will help you fight the effects of poor air quality.
Ginger and Turmeric
Ginger and turmeric are powerful anti-inflammatory ingredients that can help reduce inflammation caused by pollution. Both are known for their antioxidant properties, which combat oxidative stress in the body. Ginger aids in digestion and helps expel toxins, while turmeric, rich in curcumin, boosts immunity and promotes liver health. Try adding them to your tea or including them in smoothies to start your day.
Green Leafy Vegetables
Leafy greens like spinach, fenugreek are loaded with chlorophyll, a natural detoxifier that helps the liver flush out harmful toxins. Rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, these greens can strengthen the body’s defence against pollutants. Including them in your diet as salads, green smoothies, or lightly cooked dishes can help detox your body.
Citrus Fruits
Oranges, lemons, and limes are rich in Vitamin C, which is essential for combating the damage caused by free radicals in polluted environments. Vitamin C also boosts immune function and improves skin health, which can be impacted by pollution. Squeeze a lemon into warm water and drink it in the morning for an easy detox.
Beetroot
Beetroot is a powerhouse of antioxidants and nitrates, making it an ideal food for liver detoxification. It enhances blood circulation, which helps in oxygenating the blood and removing toxins from the body. Beetroot juice or adding roasted beetroot to salads can help cleanse the body and improve stamina and energy levels.
Broccoli
Broccoli is packed with antioxidants and contains sulfur-rich compounds that aid in detoxification processes in the liver. It also provides fibre, which helps in removing waste and toxins from the digestive system. Consuming broccoli steamed or in salads can boost your body’s defence against the harmful effects of pollution.
Green Tea
Green tea is rich in polyphenols, which are powerful antioxidants that help neutralize free radicals. It aids in liver detoxification and enhances overall metabolism. Replacing sugary drinks with green tea throughout the day can provide antioxidants to cleanse your body.
Flaxseeds and Chia Seeds
Both flaxseeds and chia seeds are rich in fibre and omega-3 fatty acids, which have anti-inflammatory properties. These seeds help in cleansing the digestive tract by promoting regular bowel movements, aiding in the removal of toxins. Add them to smoothies, yogurt, or oatmeal for a nutrient-dense boost.
