Breakfast provides essential nutrients to help your heart do its job more effectively, allowing for better vascular tone and blood pressure

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and rightly so. Not only does it fuel you for the entire day but also provides much-needed energy and nutrition. However, not many people know that it can also affect your blood pressure. According to studies, those who skip breakfast are more likely to have high blood pressure or hypertension.
And so, if you are among those living with hypertension, a nutrient-dense breakfast is all you need to bring the numbers down. Experts say breakfast provides essential nutrients that help your heart do its job more effectively, allowing for better vascular tone and blood pressure.
But how do you get to know the perfect time your heart can reap the benefits of breakfast?

When should you eat breakfast?

According to nutritionists, ideally, you must eat your breakfast within an hour of waking to help promote healthy blood pressure levels. Doctors say the time helps your body maintain a balanced blood sugar level early on, decreases the strain on your cardiovascular system, and promotes stable blood pressure.
Eating within 30 to 60 minutes of waking helps regulate your blood pressure levels by lowering the hormone cortisol, improving insulin sensitivity, and providing blood pressure–lowering nutrients. And so, even if you are not a breakfast eater, you can have small amounts of energy-filled foods like some fruit within an hour of waking.

Benefits of eating breakfast

Studies say there are many benefits of eating breakfast daily, apart from taking care of your cardiovascular health. A few of these are listed below:

Low-stress hormones

Not eating anything in the morning can play havoc with your blood pressure by raising levels of cortisol. Studies say skipping breakfast throws off cortisol rhythms, leading to higher cortisol levels even later in the day.
So, what you don't eat in the morning could spell trouble for your blood pressure hours later.

Takes care of your heart

Those who have high blood pressure should always aim to consume a nutrient-dense, well-balanced breakfast that is low in sodium and rich in potassium, calcium, and magnesium.
And so, rather than eating fried and sweet treats, try to include more foods that can help you achieve a balance of nutrients. Eat colourful plants like fruit, vegetables, whole grains, beans, and/or nuts, with at least 20 grams of protein and limited salt. Also, be mindful of processed meats, like sausage, which can have a surprising amount of hidden salt and preservatives.

Regulates blood sugar levels

Eating breakfast regularly helps regulate your blood sugar levels and improve insulin sensitivity—both of which, if uncontrolled, can spike your blood pressure.
