Most Indian women have genetic predisposition towards dyslipidemia, leading to high cholesterol and triglycerides

Obesity in India is reaching dangerous levels, and according to experts, changes in dietary habits and lifestyle are leading to many conditions that make you overweight and obese and thereby threaten your well-being. Doctors say women in the country are becoming more prone to lipedema—a chronic condition that causes fat to build up in the legs, hips, buttocks, and sometimes the arms.
While it is often mistaken to be obesity and lymphedema, this condition is highly progressive and extremely painful. You may have more than one type of lipedema at a time, depending on where you have symptoms. Types of lipedema include:

Type I

Fat is between your belly button and your hips.

Type II

Fat is between your pelvis and knees.

Type III

Fat is between your pelvis and ankles.

Type IV

Fat is between your shoulders and wrists.

Type V

Fat is between your knees and ankles.

Why are Indian women prone to lipedema?

According to experts, many South Asians, including Indian women, have an increased genetic predisposition towards dyslipidemia, leading to high cholesterol and triglycerides at an early age.
Since lipedema stems from strong hereditary and hormonal factors, most of the symptoms of this condition begin to show around puberty, pregnancy, or menopause. A few reasons why only women are prone to lipedema include:

Delay in regular health check-ups

Many studies say that owing to many social and cultural beliefs, most Indian women tend to neglect their own health, causing significant delays in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of lipid imbalances in the blood.

Diet

Most women, according to experts, consume foods that are loaded with refined carbohydrates, trans fatty acids, and saturated fats, coupled with irregular meal timings. Not eating proper food groups like protein, fibre, vitamins, and all the micronutrients can result in abnormal lipids in your body, leading to lipidema.

Hormonal changes

Women are prone to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and their hormonal levels create quite a lot of imbalances during pregnancy and postpartum. Also, at the time of menopause, lipid metabolism is influenced in a big way, resulting in lipidemia.

Sedentary lifestyle

Doctors say doing household chores is not considered exercise or regular workouts. However, statistics show many Indian women, especially those living in urban settings, lead a sedentary lifestyle due to domestic work or employment, which causes long-term obesity leading to metabolic diseases as well.

What are the signs and symptoms of lipedema?

A few common symptoms of lipedema include
  • Fat buildup in your butt, thighs, calves, and sometimes upper arms on both sides of your body.
  • Bumps inside the fat that feel like there’s something under your skin.
  • Pain can be from mild to severe and from constant to only with pressure.
  • A heavy feeling in your legs.
  • Swelling and inflammation
  • Skin that bruises easily.
  • Fatigue and chronic tiredness

What are the long-term complications caused by lipidema?

Doctors say having obesity does not cause lipedema, but more than half of people with this condition have a BMI higher than 35. And so, a few long-term complications that the condition can cause include:
  • Difficulty with walking.
  • Feelings of embarrassment and anxiety.
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Secondary lymphedema or lipo-lymphedema, causes blockage in your lymphatic pathway that allows a fluid called lymph to build up
  • Diseases of the veins
  • Flat feet
  • Joint issues that cause arthritis
  • Knock knees
