The activation of the trigeminal nerve leads to dilation of blood vessels disrupting your vestibular system causing vertigo and nausea

Migraine attacks are one of the worst pains you can endure. Described as a cerebrovascular disorder marked by throbbing, pounding pain, migraines usually happen on one side of your head. The trigeminal nerve is the specific nerve involved in most migraine attacks. According to experts, the pain is so high that it is accompanied by nausea and vomiting.
Many people do feel that after vomiting, the pain halts for a while and so they try and induce it but there are different reasons why it could happen.

Trigeminal hyperstimulation causes nausea

When the trigeminal nerve gets hyperstimulated during a migraine attack, it shoots out nerve impulses to a part of your brain that contains nerves that function as the sensory relay station between the brain and your gastrointestinal tract. According to experts, the abrupt activation sends the same alarm signals that happen when you have eaten something toxic, triggering the vomiting reflex.
The activation of the trigeminal nerve also leads to sudden dilation of blood vessels, disrupting your vestibular system, which causes vertigo and the sudden onset of nausea.
Doctors say vestibular migraines also affect women more than men.

Nausea and vomiting cause anorexia

According to experts, repeated bouts of nausea and vomiting can also be a cause of anorexia in some people, as it kills your appetite, and you don’t want to eat because you feel like you will get sick.
According to the American Migraine Foundation, nausea and vomiting usually occur during the prodrome phase of migraine. This phase signals the beginning of a migraine but can last several days.

How can you get rid of nausea and vomiting naturally?

Experts say there has to be an individual-based treatment plan for getting rid of both nausea and migraine as everyone experiences different symptoms.
While some new-age drugs outline a cure for migraines, here is a list of a few natural methods that can help alleviate both nausea and vomiting:
  • Loosen your clothes, especially around your stomach
  • Take deep and slow breaths
  • Apply an ice pack to your head or neck
  • Open a window or step outside to get fresh air
  • Eat a small amount of bland food, like saltines
  • Avoid foods with strong tastes and odours
  • Drink ice-cold water or hydrating beverages
  • Avoid junk, fried, and spicy food
  • Eat slowly and chew the food properly
  • Avoid doing any activity right after eating
  • Avoid brushing your teeth after eating
  • Take adequate rest
  • Do not self-medicate and contact your doctor
