Exam season is here, and it is a stressful time for students, always racing against the clock and pressured to do well. While some stress is good, too much stress can harm your mental health, productivity, and general well-being. It is important to understand and manage exam stress to keep balance during these times.
Recognising the Signs
Stress presents itself in different ways for everyone. More general symptoms include sleep difficulties, irritability, a lack of focus, fatigue, and even headaches or stomach discomfort. For some, anxiety and the doubting of one's abilities can be the progression of stress. Learning the signs of stress before they progress into burnout is important.
Strategies to Manage Exam Stress
Plan and Prioritise:
Breaking down the study material into smaller chunks and making a schedule that is achievable can help reduce feelings of being overwhelmed. Prioritise tasks and work on one topic at a time.
Take Breaks:
The brain requires rest to perform efficiently. Use the Pomodoro technique of working for 25 minutes and taking a 5-minute break to improve concentration and productivity.
Practice Self-Care:
A balanced diet, adequate exercise, and sufficient sleep are necessities during the examination period. Simple activities such as yoga or even a walk outside can reduce stress levels.
Seek Support:
Talking to friends, family, or even a counsellor about your concerns tends to relieve the pressure. Generally, airing your worries alleviates the burden and provides fresh insight into managing stress.
Stay Positive:
Replace the negative self-talk with affirmations. Remind yourself that exams are just one little part of life, and your worth goes far beyond grades.
When Stress Becomes Overwhelming
Sometimes stress can snowball into a bigger mental health issue. If feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, or despair persist, seek help.
Exams are very important, but they are never the ultimate definition of success and happiness. To be resilient is to learn to cope with stress, and being healthy in looking at challenges would be a valuable asset beyond classrooms.
Remember to take care of your mental well-being as you prepare for class. Strive for progress, not perfection, and always believe in the strength and will to overcome what comes your way.
