New Year resolutions often fail since most people are not able to turn them into long-term habits
It's the same story every year.
On January 1, most people have a list ready of resolutions related to their health for the new year. However, according to studies, 90 per cent of these fail.
How long do New Year's resolutions last?
While it differs for everyone, a poll from Forbes Health found that most people give up resolutions after less than three months. According to the survey, just around 8 per cent of people said their resolutions lasted a month, 21.9 per cent reported two months and 22.2 per cent reported their resolutions lasted three months. Only 1 per cent said they lasted for a year.
Why do resolutions fail?
According to health experts, New Year resolutions often fail since most people are not able to turn them into long-term habits.
"Research shows that 40 per cent of what we do day in and day out are habits. Habits are things that you do without even thinking. You do those things like a routine, habitually, almost automatic," Justin Hale, an adviser and speaker at leadership and management consulting company Crucial Learning, told CBS News.
"The problem is people, when they want to be better in the new year, they never focus on understanding what are the exact behaviors that I need to be done to turn into habits, and what's the plan I'm going to create to make that thing habitual."
According to doctors, it is important to not just plan healthy habits but also incorporate them as important using your grit and willpower.
Experts also feel many people aim for too many resolutions, and most of them either become unachievable or boring as time passes. Most people are not realistic and s the motivation to take care of their health declines. According to doctors, you must always form a health goal that can be easily prioritized.
Easy ways to achieve your New Year's Health resolution
While the most common health resolution is to get healthier, the new year is indeed a perfect time to make those changes and plan for a brighter future. But since you may not be as focused as time passes, here are a few ways to strengthen your resolve and achieve success.
Create an achievable goal
It is not difficult to achieve a goal that is realistic and not very difficult. For example, if your goal is to run 30 minutes every day, shrink it down to just putting on your running shoes and seeing what happens. Also, your environment is also important, so, set it up to be the most conducive to your new routine.
Prioritize your mental health
While physical health is a priority, your mental health is also equally important. While it can be a priority and challenge when you are busy or taking care of other things, it should be given equal support.
Make sure to take a break every week from your work and household chores and do things that you like.
Eat homemade food
According to experts, when you start any new habit to improve your health, you must envision the happiness, gratitude, or pride you will feel when you create and stick to a healthy habit that can help drive your motivation and keep you on track.
Make sure to eat healthy, fresh, and homemade food that is full of nutrients and important minerals that are much needed by your body.
Sleep at the same time daily
Doctors say high-quality sleep is as “important to your health and well-being as nutrition and exercise.” Most adults need 7 hours of quality sleep each night to perform at their best, fight off infections, have better heart health, and weigh less.
For a healthy sleep routine, go to sleep and wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. Make your bedroom as dark as possible and unplug from your phone or electronics a few hours before bedtime.
