As per a new study led by researchers from the Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS), the number of chronic kidney disease (CKD) cases in women has nearly tripled in the past three decades globally. It further revealed that Type 2 diabetes and hypertension were the leading causes of CKD-related deaths in women.
Hardik Dineshbhai Desai, an independent clinical and public health researcher at GAIMS, while speaking to media said, "This calls for immediate policy interventions, targeted prevention programmes, and investment in health care infrastructure to curb the rise of CKD, particularly in high-risk regions."
Times Now Digital spoke to Dr. Naveen Reddy Avula, Consultant Nephrologist, Asian Institute of Nephrology and Urology Hyderabad. He listed certain tips and lifestyle changes to keep your kidneys protected.

Stay Hydrated

Drink plenty of water to help kidneys filter waste effectively. Aiming for about 8-10 glasses a day is better. Adequate fluid intake helps balancing the kidneys function and avoids extra strain on kidneys.

Minimise Salt

Reduce processed, canned and salty foods to avoid overloading your kidneys. Kidneys are most sensitive towards salt.

Health Ailment TargetsKeep a check on your blood pressure and diabetes - which are the most common culprits for kidney problems. Manage these conditions with lifestyle changes and medication prescribed by your doctor.

Stay Active

Regular exercise helps maintain healthy blood pressure and weight, reducing strain on the kidneys. Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity most days. Walking, running, cardio fitness exercises, moderate weight lifting may suffice.

Eat Healthy

Processed foods are often high in phosphorus, sodium, and unhealthy fats, which can burden your kidneys over time. Eating foods as fresh as possible can be followed.
